Calico came to Dave and I in 1991, a "gift" from my cousin Jill after they could not reconcile their differences. You see, Jill had lost the battle with Calico over an empty can of tuna fish. Calico gave Jill a bite that put her in the hospital for nearly a week. Ever hear of the term Cat Scratch Fever? It is not just a Ted Nugent song, but a bacterial disease. Calico passed the bacteria to Jill through her saliva. Anyway, we took her in, and she has been with us through the many years. Years which brought a wedding, a new baby, a new kitten, a new dog, a new house.
Three years ago, Calico was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, and put on medication to control her levels. We were warned at the time that the medication would likely cause her kidneys to fail. Calico is now asleep near me, and I know in my heart that tonight is the last night she will be with us. I will miss her, but will always treasure the years she was ours.
